The disease follows a chronic, fluctuating course and the severity may differ between individuals (1).

Presentation is with cosmetic concerns, skin eruption and occasional symptoms of burning, tightness, and less commonly, pruritus (2)

  • erythematous monomorphic small papules and pustules are seen around the mouth (sparing the vermillion border of the lips), nasolabial area, medial cheeks
  • can be occasionally scaly
  • erythema of the nasolabial fold can be the first sign of perioral dermatitis (3)
  • less commonly periorbital area may be involved as well (periocular dermatitis) (2)

Facial flushing and telangiectasis are not features of Perioral dermatitios (unlike in rosacea) (3)

The condition is intolerant to sunlight and soaps, cosmetics or even simple topical preparations may be tolerated badly (1)
