This is the technique of labelling white cells extracorporeally and then reinjecting them into the patient. This technique is used to identify areas of sepsis. If the patient is neutropaenic then donor white cells may be used.

The maximum sensitivity of this test is not reached for 24 hours.

False positive scans may occur with haematomas and inflammatory disease. False negatives may occur in chronic sepsis.
