Stratum lucidum
The stratum lucidum is present only in thick skin and is sometimes ascribed to be part of the stratum corneum, which it sits deep to. It is superficial to the stratum granulosum.
Cells here are in a state of losing intracellular organelles and amassing keratin within their cytoplasm.
