Differential diagnosis
The severe photosensitivity, red fluorescent urine and erythrodontia are usually diagnostic of erythropoietic porphyria (EP). A differential diagnosis of EP includes:
- xeroderma pigmentosum
- epidermolysis bullosa - but haemolytic anaemia is rare in this condition, and it is common in areas of repeated trauma rather than in light-exposed areas
- pemphigoid
- erythropoietic protophorphyria
