Myositis presents as red, hard and painful swellings of the large muscles especially in the back and neck.
When large volumes of muscle are involved the patient feels ill and may be pyrexic.
The clinical appearance may be confused with sarcoma or infection.
Pain and swelling usually subsides within a week.
Myositis may be caused by minor trauma or surgery.
