- endocrine disease – diabetes, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism
- blood dyscrasias or advanced malignancy
- radiotherapy/chemotherapy
- reduced immune status e.g. – HIV infection
- physiologic states: old age/infancy/pregnancy
Local factors
- removable dental appliances
- poor oral or denture hygiene
- xerostomia
- high carbohydrate diet
- broad spectrum antibiotics
- trauma
- heavy smoking (1)
