Classification of vasculitides

The primary axis of classification of the vasculitides is according to the size of the affected vessels: (1)

  • large arteries
  • medium arteries
  • small vessels

The antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) are three separate conditions: (1,2)

  • granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA - formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis)
  • microscopic polyangiitis (MPA).
  • eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA - previously known as Churg-Strauss syndrome)
