Vomiting

Vomiting as a cause of failure to thrive may itself have many causes:

  • Indicator of general infection
  • Pyloric stenosis
  • Hiatus hernia
  • Oesophageal incoordination

Note that some babies enjoy bringing their feeds back, 'ruminating' like a cow. This is often a difficult habit to break but becomes less of a problem as the infant's diet, abilities and interests change. This behaviour is unlikely to be a cause of failure to thrive.
