Cautions and contraindications

Cautions include:-

  • hypotensive conditions, where intravenous infusion should be avoided
  • tolerance, which can be avoided by allowing blood levels to fall to low concentrations for between four and eight hours a day
  • interactions, for which a current issue of the BNF should be consulted - appendix 1.

Contraindications include:-

  • marked anaemia
  • head injury
  • cerebral haemorrhage
  • close angle glaucoma
