Interleukin-1 has the following effects:

  • production of an antiviral state
  • induction of T-lymphocyte proliferation by increasing:
    • the amount of IL-2 produced by the T-lymphocyte
    • the number of IL-2 receptors it has on its surface
  • stimulation of B-lymphocytes
  • chemotactic for lymphocytes
  • stimulation of fibroblasts:
    • synthesize collagen
    • produce collagenase
    • synthesize prostaglandins
  • acts on the endothelium to increase leukocyte adhesion
  • stimulate anorexia centrally
  • increase beta-endorphin release and the number of receptors for endorphins; diminishes pain perception
  • endogenous pyrogen, acting on anterior hypothalamus probably via action on prostaglandins
  • restructuring of connective tissue:
    • degradation of collagen and proteoglycan
    • stimulation of osteoclasts
  • stimulation of the acute phase response
  • stimulates pituitary ACTH secretion
