Patients with the carotid sinus syndrome (CSS) have an exagerated baroreceptor response resulting in periods of inappropriately high vagal tone and sympathetic suppression.

The diagnosis is frequently made in:

  • men over 50
  • patients with atherosclerosis and hypertension
