AIRE trial

2006 patients with acute myocardial infarction, complicated at any time by left ventricular failure, were randomised to:

  • ramipril, an ACE-inhibitor, 5 mg twice daily
  • placebo

Randomisation took place 3-10 days post-MI (mean 5 days).

Treatment with ramipril resulted in:

  • an absolute reduction in mortality of 6%
  • an odds reduction for death of 26%
  • the prevention of 45 premature deaths per 1000 patient years
