Grossly the kidneys are swollen and oedematous with a pale cortex and congested medulla.

Histologically the glomeruli are normal.

Tubular changes are subtle and include cytoplasmic swelling, single or multiple cell necrosis, tubular regeneration, and dilatation with tubules line by flattened non - descript epithelium lacking a brush border. Interstial oedema is prominent. Tubular casts are prominent.
