  • pregnancy
  • impaired voiding of the bladder
  • genitourinary malformation
  • prostatic hypertrophy
  • renal stones

Risk factors for asymptomatic bacteriuria in women include (1)

  • being sexually active
  • increasing age
  • concomitant diabetes
  • institutionalised patients
  • presence of a catheter
