Left shift of the oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve

Oxygen dissociation to the left is shifted by lower CO2, higher pH and lower temperature.

Oxygen dissociation is shifted to the left by fetal haemoglobin. The fetal haemoglobin appears to have similar affinity for oxygen to adult human haemoglobin; however there appears to be a low binding of 2,3 DPG to fetal haemoglobin.

 

The curve is shifted irreversibly to the left with carbon monoxide.
