The oesophagus descends on the posterior thoracic and abdominal walls slightly to the left of the posteriorly-sited vertebral bodies between the levels of the sixth and eleventh thoracic vertebrae. It passes through the diaphragm at the level of the tenth thoracic vertebra - the oesophageal aperture.
