Isosorbide dinitrate can be used in the treatment of angina
Doses are 5 to 40 mg /6h PO or slow release 20-60 mg every 12 to 24 hours, bearing in mind that 12 hourly doses can cause tolerance.
Isosorbide dinitrate may delivered by skin patches 5-10 mg/24 hr. Patches should be removed at night to prevent tolerance.
Buccal absorption of isosorbide dinitrate is effective.
Isosorbide dinitrate has unpredictable bioavailability because of variable hepatic metabolism to active mononitrate metabolites.
The principle side effect, as with GTN is the development of headaches.
