This is classed as a primary cartilaginous joint but it is not a true joint in so much as it is not the connection point of 2 bones but rather the demarcation between ossified cartilage posteriorly and unossified cartilage anteriorly. This is confirmed by the continuity of the perichondrium of the rib with the periosteum of the bone.
