The testis develops as a retroperitoneal organ at the lower pole of the kidney and during the seventh month of fetal life, descends caudally through the inguinal canal and into the scrotum. About 90% of male children have normally descended testis at birth. In others, testicular descent occurs more gradually, often completing during the first two weeks of life but very rarely, delaying beyond the first year.
