Screening investigations

Authoring team

A baseline set of laboratory investigations should be sent including:

  • biochemistry
    • Urea and electrolytes
  • haematology
    • FBC
  • urinalysis (+/- microscopy)
  • microbiology
    • urine culture (if infection is suspected)
    • blood culture (if infection is suspected)

More specific renal investigations are dependent upon the clinical presentation and may include:

  • renal immunology
    • immunology screen which consists of C3, C4, ANA, ENA, Ds DNA, P and C ANCA, anti-GBM, rheumatoid factor and immunoglobulins
  • urine analysis for Bence Jones protein
  • urinary biochemistry
    • electrolytes
    • osmolality
  • ECG
  • chest x-ray
  • abdominal x-ray
  • renal tract ultrasound (within 24hrs if obstruction suspected or esoteric cause suspected requiring a kidney biopsy)
  • kidney biopsy
