Ergot is the dried sclerotium of the fungus Claviceps purpurea. It may cause gangrene especially in the fingers, nose and ears.
Ergotic gangrene is common among inhabitants on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Russian steppes who eat rye bread infected with Claviceps, and in migraine sufferers who take ergot preparations.
