Obsessional phenomena are contents of consciousness of an unpleasant and recurrent sort which the patient experiences but attempts to resist. They are recognised by the patient as being their own thoughts.
An example of an obsessional phenomenon is the patient who has to test that the front door is locked twenty times before they can go off to work.
