The aim of this form of treatment is to overcome the crisis before a breakdown or the development of maladaptive behaviour.
It is a technique is effective as an early intervention.
The following components are involved:
- classification - the patient clarifies his problems
- expression of emotions - discussion of the crisis helps the patient to express feelings that are appropriate e.g. grief in bereavement
- support from family and friends is encouraged
- examination of coping resources - if existing coping methods are adaptive and applicable then they are encouraged
- discouragement of maladaptive assumptions and behaviours - this may be achieved via a judicious use of cognitive techniques or, if necessary, by direct discouragement
- alternative coping strategies are identified, discussed, implemented and reinforced until the crisis resolves and the patient's confidence is restored
- therapy is discontinued before dependence on the therapist develops
