The most important adverse effect with cholic acids is diarrhoea secondary to reduced gastrointestinal water and electrolyte reabsorption. Tolerance develops with time and ursodeoxycholic acid is the less likely of the two agents to show this effect.
Both can exacerbate peptic ulceration.
Chenodeoxycholic acid can impair liver function.
