On each side, the pterygomaxillary ligament is a fibrous band extending between the tuberosity of the maxilla posteroinferiorly to the tip of the pterygoid hamulus. Anteroinferiorly it forms part of the origin of the buccinator muscle. Posterosuperior to the ligament is a small recess that is traversed by the tendon of tensor palati as it turns around the hamulus.
