The Achilles tendon may be torn without complete loss of tendon continuity. Often the central fibres are ruptured, leaving surrounding fibres intact.
Tests for complete rupture of the Achilles tendon are negative. There is usually a tender, fusiform swelling near the midpoint of the tendon.
