Retract the breast with the left hand and palpate with the right. Feel with the palmar surface of the fingers i.e. with the hand flat.

Palpate the breast:

  • circumferentially in quadrants
  • at the centre
  • at the axillary tail

Identify any masses, noting:

  • location
  • size
  • consistency
  • tenderness
  • skin dimpling
  • mobility
