Upto 20% of all symptomatic vertebral fractures and 30% of hip fractures occur in men.
The WHO definition of osteoporosis (T score < -2.5) has only been established for women, but there appears to be a similar relationship between male and female bone density values and fracture risk. The results of applying the WHO definition to men also seems to broadly match the reported lifetime fracture risk in men.
There is also some uncertainty as to how the WHO criteria should be applied to men, with some people using the T score threshold of -2.5 as applied to the young male mean and others preferring to apply the young female mean.
