This is relatively common and may be due to a variety of agents. Adenovirus or picornaviruses are the most common causes of viral conjunctivitis.
Adenoviral conjunctivitis occurs sporadically but also may become epidemic.
Viral conjunctivitis is spread by droplet infection and there is an increased risk of spread in any situation where people are in regular close contact. The risk of spread can be reduced by careful hand-washing and rigorous hygiene (e.g. use of separate towels).
Usually the disease is mild and rapidly self - limiting but may occasionlly be severe and disabling.
