Phyllodes tumours consist of mixed epithelial and connective tissue elements but have greater stromal cellularity than fibroadenomas.
Benign and malignant tumours are recognised. Distinction is made on cytological grounds such as cellular irregularity and mitotic activity. Most of the tumours previously termed cytosarcoma phyllodes fall into the benign group.
