This is a loss of vertical and later of horizontal gaze, that is associated with:
The reflex eye movements on neck flexion and extension remain intact.
Males are more frequently affected than females and symptoms usually occur between the ages of 45 and 70 years.
There is no effective treatment and death usually occurs in five to ten years.
