Lower motor neurone lesions are, by and large, distinct from upper motor neurone lesions in both aetiology and signs - the principal exception being motor neurone disease, which has both upper and lower features.
It is useful to divide the aetiology of lower motor neurone lesions into those resulting in bilateral problems and those which cause unilateral problems. The latter can further subdivided into central and peripheral aetiology.
