The long thoracic nerve supplies the serratus anterior muscle. It may be injured as a result of pressure on the shoulder, either from a sudden blow or by prolonged carrying of heavy objects. It is often one of the nerves affected in brachial neuritis and may also be damaged in diabetes mellitus. Winging of the scapula results.
