The stenosis of the coronary ostia caused by syphilitic aortitis is often superimposed on atheromatous disease.
The clinical features are of myocardial ischaemia and, occasionally, infarction.
Syphilis should be suspected in patients with myocardial ischaemia when the chest radiograph shows dilatation or calcification of the ascending aorta.
