Claw toe is said to exist when there is hyperextension of the metatarsophalangeal joints and flexion of the interphalangeal joints. This condition is often idiopathic - in such cases there is likely to be a family history of claw toe. Pathological causes of claw toe include peroneal muscular atrophy, poliomyelitis and rheumatoid arthritis.
