cerebral anoxia: this may produce a bizarre respiratory pattern that may mimic dyspnoea.
metabolic acidosis: this may present with hyperventilation.
congenital heart disease: the status of peripheral perfusion, ECG, and chest radiology will help discriminate between congenital heart disease and respiratory distress syndrome. The findings on auscultation may not be helpful.
