Azithromycin

The antibacterial activity of azithromycin is similar to that of erythromycin against Gram positive bacteria but it is more active than erythromycin against some Gram negative organisms.

Indications:

  • respiratory tract infections
  • otitis media
  • skin and soft tissue infections
  • uncomplicated genital chlamydial infections

Cautions:

  • renal impairment
  • pregnancy and lactation

Contra-indications:

  • hepatic impairment

Side-effects:

  • diarrhoea
  • cholestatic jaundice if give for more than 14 days
  • nausea and vomiting

Routes of administration:

  • oral:
    • capsules
    • suspension
