Thrombosis

Thrombosis is the pathological formation of clot.

Examples of clinically-relevant thrombosis include:

  • coronary thrombosis, frequently leading to myocardial infarction
  • cerebral thrombosis, causing strokes
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • arterial thrombosis e.g. in the lower limb
  • heparin-induced thrombosis

Thrombolytic and anticoagulant drugs are used to treat thrombosis; surgical intervention may be required.

Thromboembolism may be a sequel to thrombosis.
