Megakaryocytes are a type of giant cell found in the bone marrow. They are 30-160 micrometers in diameter, polypoid in shape and have a multilobed nucleus. With Romanowsky stains, they appear light blue with red granules.
Megakaryocytes key function is to produce platelets which bud off from their cytoplasm.
