Hydroxychloroquine is used for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and it is also used in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus. In rheumatoid arthritis it is perhaps less effective than other agents, and it is not often used in the united kingdom. It is however more popular for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in the united states.

It may cause ocular toxicity, and it requires initial baseline ophthalmological examination, and depending on the dose possible further repeat examination. Inquiry should be made regarding visual symptomatology and some suggest annual visual acuity testing.
