The insulin like growth factors are somatomedins, ie growth factors synthesised in the liver in response to growth hormone. Thus they mediate most of the growth-promoting effects of growth hormone.
The most important of these is IGF-I; there is also IGF II.
In acromegaly the levels of IGFs are increased - however they do not always reflect disease activity.
