The majority of leiomyomas arise in the body of the uterus and are described according to their anatomic location:
Less commonly, they arise in the cervix, between the leaves of the broad ligaments, and in the various supporting ligaments of the uterus.
A newer and more detailed leiomyoma subclassification system has been introduced by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) (1).
