Because patients with sigmoid volvulus generally have developed an anatomical abnormality - a large capacious sigmoid colon - this condition often recurs. If the patient is frail and not suitable for operation, then the loop can be deflated many times.
If the volvulus recurs and the patient is fit enough for an operation then a sigmoid colectomy, or operation to suture the bowel to the abdominal wall, may be considered. This can be done prophylactically after the patient has been prepared for a few days.
