Proton pump inhibitors work by inhibition of the membrane proton pump in gastric parietal cells. It results in a dose-dependent inhibition of gastric acid secretion.
Omeprazole results in the suppression of acid production with a higher efficacy and a longer duration of action than can be achieved with a H2 antagonist, e.g. ranitidine (1).
