  • pancreatitis:
    • pain is usually in the upper abdomen and back
    • there will be a high serum amylase activity

  • cholecystitis:
    • pain is in the right upper quadrant
    • if there is tenderness in the right iliac fossa then the tenderness is greater in the right upper quadrant
