Factors that may be considered include:

  • the effect of treatment - with a few exceptions a population treated with antibiotics improve about 24 hrs sooner
  • time management:
    • short term it takes less time to write a prescription
    • long term it takes more time to explain but less consultations will be made if there is a consensus
  • symptoms and signs that demonstrate bacterial and viral infection
  • indication for antibiotics
  • non infective causes of sore throat
