Causes include:-

  • mild pyrexia
    • tissue damage and necrosis } at the site of the
    • haematoma } operation
  • higher persistent pyrexia
    • postoperative atelectasis
    • specific infections related to the surgery
      • biliary infection after biliary surgery
      • urinary tract infection after urological surgery

Note that fever due to a blood transfusion may occur in this initial postoperative period.
