Striae are lines of discolouration and changed texture occuring on the skin. They are often the result of stretching - for example in obesity or pregnancy; these striae tend to be pale. However, in Cushing's syndrome underlying capillaries become prominent resulting in bright red or purple striae on the abdomen, breast and thighs.
Pigmentation suggests elevated ACTH.
