Mycophelolate is metabolised to mycopheolic acid which inhibits the synthesis of the purine nucleotide guanine. Mycophenolate mofetil inhibits the proliferation of B and T cells in response to antigen stimulation.
The addition of mycophenolate mofetil to the standard immunosuppressant regimen of cyclosporin and prednisolone in kidney transplant recipients reduces the frequency of acute rejection episodes.
Mycophenolate mofetil may have a role in the treatment of acute rejection.
