Merkel cells are epidermally-sited cells of the skin believed to be involved with the sensation of fine touch. They are found within the stratum basale layer concentrated near to hair follicles. Desmosomes link Merkel cells to surrounding keratinocytes.
Commonly apposed to the base of a Merkel cell is an expanded dilation of a nerve fibre. Within the cytoplasm are various densely-staining granules. These are believed to contain a variety of transmitter substances for release to the nerve fibre on stimulation by movement of the cell relative to its surroundings.
